From Salvage to Sculpture: The Start of the Build

The Creative Process: Building a Camera from Scrap
The inspiration came from the boxy body of a Sony FX3 camera. I started with a rough pile of scrap—chains, rebar, bolts, and broken hand tools. From there, I pieced together a rough body using chopped bolts for corners, layers of chain for texture, and rebar for structure.
Each weld was done by hand. Some days it flowed. Others, I wrestled with warped metal and broken tacks. But every challenge shaped the outcome. What started as junk slowly turned into something recognizable—a sculptural interpretation of a digital camera, with steampunk flair and industrial edge.
Lens, Detail, and Texture
The lens became the centerpiece. I welded a circular structure from cut metal and bicycle chain, giving it a bold, textured frame. The face of the sculpture is filled with old tools—Allen wrenches, chisels, and even a few stamped Sears pieces—bringing a unique vintage feel to the build.
The back of the camera features a viewing screen and functional-looking buttons, all built from more reclaimed metal. Every surface was wire-brushed, welded, and shaped to evoke the rugged feel of analog machinery with the modern silhouette of a digital camera.
