Welding, Painting, and Bringing Public Art Back to Life in Western Massachusetts
In a world of digital checkouts and e-books, there’s still something wonderfully old-school about returning a library book in person—especially when you’re greeted by an elephant.
The Warren Library in Warren, Massachusetts has long featured a whimsical elephant-themed outdoor book drop. Beloved by the community and instantly recognizable, this piece of functional art had served its purpose for years. But like many outdoor fixtures exposed to the elements, it had begun to break down. Rust, peeling paint, and weather damage had taken their toll.
That’s where I came in.
As a metal artist and fabricator based in Western Massachusetts, I specialize in welding, restoration, and public art projects. When I was asked to help recondition the Warren Library drop box, I saw more than just a utilitarian fixture—I saw a local landmark worth saving.
The Process: Welding, Repair, and Repainting
The drop box arrived at my shop covered in flaking paint and surface corrosion. Structurally, it was still solid, but it needed a full overhaul to remain functional and safe for the long haul. I began by grinding off the rust and damaged areas, then welding new metal where necessary to reinforce the body.
Once the structure was sound, I moved on to painting. Using weather-resistant coatings and bold, bright colors, I carefully recreated the iconic elephant design that had charmed so many library visitors over the years. Every curve, outline, and detail was hand-painted to ensure longevity and character.
Why Projects Like This Matter
Restoration work like this combines artistry with craftsmanship. It’s not just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about honoring what was there and preserving it for the future. Whether it’s a sculpture, an architectural detail, or a functional piece of public infrastructure, these elements help define the character of a community.
For the Warren Library, the elephant drop box isn’t just a place to return books—it’s a symbol of imagination, accessibility, and local pride.
