Sculpting Steel: A Scrap Metal Seahorse with Soul

Scrap Metal Seahorse Sculpture: Handcrafted Art from Recycled Steel

Creating Metal Art from Salvaged Parts
I recently completed a custom seahorse sculpture built entirely from scrap metal, using salvaged motorcycle and Jeep parts. As a metal artist based in Massachusetts, I’m always looking for ways to give new life to discarded materials. For this project, I sourced parts from local salvage yards—everything from sway bars and brake levers to timing chains and suspension coils.

Each component brought its own history and shape, and together they formed something unexpectedly organic: a seahorse forged from steel and imagination.

The Scrap Metal Sculpture Process
Unlike some projects that start with sketches, this seahorse sculpture evolved on the welding bench. I began with a Jeep sway bar as the spine, then used a MIG welder to attach gears, washers, and shock fragments. I shaped each piece by hand to reflect the natural curves of a seahorse’s body. I kept the surface raw and unpolished, letting the industrial textures show through.

At just under four feet tall, the sculpture feels dynamic and lifelike, even though it’s built from entirely mechanical elements.

On Display in Easthampton, MA
The sculpture is now temporarily installed at the Warriors Art Room in Easthampton, Massachusetts—a nonprofit gallery space supporting veteran and military-connected artists. Visitors can view the sculpture near the front entrance, where it stands in its natural, unfinished steel form. Over time, the sculpture will rust and weather, adding another layer of story and texture to the piece.

Why Scrap Metal Art Matters
This seahorse isn’t just a creative project—it’s part of a larger movement to repurpose, rethink, and reframe what art can be. By turning scrap into sculpture, I aim to show how recycled metal art can be both sustainable and deeply expressive. Each component in this piece once powered a machine. Now, they power a story.
